Timber decking
Treated softwood is the most affordable option and looks natural. It needs cleaning and treating every year or two to keep it looking good and to stop it going slippery.
Composite decking
Composite boards cost more to buy but need very little upkeep: no staining or sealing, just an occasional wash. They come in set colours and hold their colour well.
Under the boards
Whatever boards you choose, the frame underneath matters most. A properly levelled, well-supported frame is what makes a deck last.
Hot tubs and heavy loads
A hot tub full of water is very heavy. If one is going on or in the deck, the base and frame need designing for the weight from the start.
Extras
Steps, built-in seating, planters, screening and lighting set into the timber all turn a deck into an outdoor room.
