Bathroom refits: what order the trades go in

A bathroom refit involves several trades. Getting them in the right order is what keeps it on time.

1. Strip-out

The old suite, tiles and boarding come out, so any hidden problems with floors, walls or pipes can be dealt with early.

2. First fix

New pipework and electrics are run, and the joinery goes in: stud walls, boxing-in, shower niches and noggins to support wall-hung toilets and basins.

3. Boarding and plastering

Walls are boarded with the right boards for wet areas, then plastered or prepared for tiling.

4. Tiling and panelling

Floor and wall tiles go on, along with any panelling or slatted features.

5. Second fix

The bath, shower, toilet, basin, taps and lighting are fitted and connected, and the room is sealed and finished.

One point of contact

Ash does the joinery himself and brings in plumbers, electricians and tilers he trusts, so you deal with one person from start to finish.
